AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program Member

Position Description:

AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program (AVAP) members provide crisis intervention, direct support services, and advocacy to individuals and families who have been impacted by domestic, sexual, and stalking violence addressing critical needs of communities throughout New Hampshire. Members receive training from experts in the field on crucial topics related to victim/survivor advocacy. As financial abuse presents a significant barrier to survivors in accessing safety, members integrate economic empowerment into their advocacy by providing financial literacy education and services.

AVAP is currently accepting applications for 2023-2024 service positions which will begin 9/4/2023 and end 9/3/2024. AVAP members are placed at crisis center and criminal justice-based host sites throughout the State of New Hampshire. Both full time (1700 hours) and half time (900 hours) positions are available.

By serving a year with AVAP, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of victim/survivors of domestic, sexual, and stalking violence. The experience and training you receive will not only help you make a difference in the field of victim/survivor services but will also allow you to make valuable connections within the profession, community, and with other socially conscious individuals.

Full time service includes a living stipend totaling $17,600. Half time Service includes living stipend of $9,328. An educational award of $ 6,895 for full time service and $3,447.50 for half time service, is also offered upon successful completion of service. This can be used to pay back qualified student loans or to pay for the cost of attending a qualified higher education institution. Health insurance and child care are also offered to full time members.

Granite State Education Corps

Position Description:

In the Granite State Education Corps, direct service AmeriCorps members serve at-risk youth across New Hampshire. Many Granite State youth have been impacted by trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which, without proper support, can negatively affect success, health, and functioning long-term.

The good news? The impacts of ACEs can be counteracted, and one of those “counter-ACEs” is relationships. The Granite State Education Corps aims to introduce stability and positive relationships into the lives of at-risk middle and high school youth by pairing them with AmeriCorps member mentors, who regularly meet one-on-one with a caseload of ten students to increase their resiliency, social and emotional skills, and self-sufficiency—in essence, serving the “whole child.”

Members are placed at host site organizations across the Granite State, from the Seacoast’s Dover and Rochester to Tilton, by the lakes and mountains, to southern New Hampshire’s cities of Concord, Manchester, and Nashua. Host sites include schools like Next Charter School and Kreiva Academy; community organizations such as the Dover Housing Authority and Nashua Police Athletic League; and afterschool programs like the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester.

Daily Duties:

-Members meet one on one with students to build relationships, set goals for the students' growth, and/or provide academic tutoring

-Members meet with students in small groups to facilitate experiential learning activities

-Members may create and lead lessons or after school clubs depending on their skill set and interests

-Members mentor and provide academic support to a caseload of at least ten students that have been impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

-Members implement Social Emotional Learning best practices when interacting with students

Public Health AmeriCorps

Members will work with these partner agencies to develop and carry out localized public health interventions that address issues like access to care, drug abuse and misuse, care for veterans, health education and mental health initiatives.

Members will be connecting people to care, organizing volunteers, running health clinics, doing educational outreach and much more! Through their extensive service and training, members will gain the experience needed to pursue a career in public health

The Goodwill VISTA Partnership

Since 2015, the Goodwill VISTA Partnership has sought to alleviate poverty in communities across Maine, from the most rural areas to the most populous cities. At present, members are placed in partner agencies situated in Androscoggin, Aroostook, Cumberland, Hancock, Kennebec, Lincoln, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, Washington, and York counties.

VISTA Members work to reduce poverty while engaging through a plethora of forms of indirect service, such as creating and running programs, fundraising and grant writing, communications work, increasing social media presence, recruiting volunteers, as well as assisting with community assessments, among other projects. Focus areas of partner agencies include public health, food security, new Americans, environmental justice, educational support, youth development, housing, and more!

The diverse work of AmeriCorps VISTA members contributes to the capacity-building and organizational-development goals of Maine agencies which contribute invaluable boosts to the wellbeing of communities. In 2018, 34 VISTA members provided 3,000 hours of service, working to recruit over 1,405 new volunteers, leveraging over 1.1 million dollars for host-site organizations, and creating 243 new and enhanced systems and business processes. The positive impact VISTA members offer their local communities is remarkable, and continues to build year after year.
